Nordic Noir offer up their first Norwegian show that takes many elements from crime dramas from around the world and presents a daring and engaging mystery. After journalist Peter Varas (Oigarden) discovers his brother is mixed up in some embezzling (that wonderful crime we’re all too proud to admit we don’t fully understand), he is forced to follow his journalistic integrity and reveal the truth to the world. Peter’s brother is quick to take his own life but after 5 years is becomes apparent that similar scenarios are happening again and perhaps it was never a simple case of embezzling and suicide.

Mammon works because the mystery element is so well plotted and executed. It really does feel as though the writers mapped everything out to the finest detail and then chose the best ways in which to reveal information. This expertly executed thriller means that the mystery unravels with delightful surprises that do not feel forced in order to shock the audience. It’s also a mystery that the viewer can gradually work out if they’re paying attention and will also reward those familiar with certain subjects, most specifically religion. The show is never condescending either, assuming that you are keeping up with developments, which means we do not have to suffer through painfully long scenes of exposition.

There are many tropes that fans of the genre will be looking out for in the early stages, and they’ll probably be able to guess a lot individual twists, but not necessarily where they come from. The cast fill their characters with individual personalities, and even the red herrings at least come across as genuine human beings. Interestingly enough the protagonist is perhaps the least likable character to begin with, as his actions constantly cause harm to others. As the series continues, we are soon drawn to him as he must face ever increasing odds.

This is everything a crime/thriller should be. There were distinctive characters, unravelling enigmas, and scenes of great tension. The grim cinematography captures the cold landscapes which many of us will associate with Scandinavian countries, and such settings naturally add to the murky atmosphere. Taut and thoughtful, Mammon never once loses focus. Having it as a DVD box set may result in tearing through all 6 episodes in very quick succession.
