New Animated ‘Batman’ 75th Anniversary Short

Batman Beyond

It’s strange to think that Batman is 75 years old this year and with the multiple re-inventions and different iterations of the character we have seen, it looks like we will be visiting Gotham City for many more to come. To celebrate Batman’s 75th Anniversary, Warner Bros are certainly pulling out all the stops with the upcoming Batman: Arkham Knight video game, 2 animated movies and a prequel television series in the form of Fox’s Gotham.

Today, Warner Bros Animation and DC Entertainment have released a brand new animated short focussing on the future version of the caped crusader, in order to commemorate the Dark Knight’s birthday. Batman Beyond ran from 1999 to 2001, and I don’t think I’m alone in saying that it is by far one of the greatest animated series’ of all time. As a result it was a great shame to see the show finish and fans (myself included) have clamoured for some sort of continuation ever since.

Aside from a few Justice League crossover’s, Batman Beyond has merely lived on in comic form and hasn’t re-emerged in animation until now. Will Friedle and Kevin Conroy once again lend their iconic voices to the cherished characters of Terry Mcginnis and Bruce Wayne, in this excellent short from Darwyn Cooke, with a fantastic surprise ending that pays tribute to Batman in his many different forms. Check it out below:

We can only hope that the popularity of this wonderful short foreshadows a return to television from the tomorrow Knight after it accumulated such an overwhelming fan following 15 years ago. On the other hand we still have the SON OF BATMAN and ASSAULT ON ARKHAM animated movies on the way, as well as the exciting Gotham prequel series starring Ben McKenzie.
