As a big fan of Sony and Screen Gems’ RESIDENT EVIL franchise, it was disappointing to learn that the sixth instalment in the Horror/Science Fiction series will not reach its September 2014 release date. After the mammoth cliffhanger left at the conclusion of 2012’s RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION it was inevitable that a further sequel was in the pipeline, however it was merely a question of when it would hit theatres.
Now that series director (and husband of series star Milla Jovovich) Paul W.S. Anderson has finished work on his disaster epic POMPEII, he has revealed that work has begun on the sixth RESIDENT EVIL film. At a 3D film summit for the Beijing International Film Festival, the DEATH RACE director has been quoted as referring to the next instalment in the franchise as RISING RESIDENT EVIL (or more likely a mistranslation of RESIDENT EVIL: RISING). Anderson also confirmed that Bingbing Li will return after appearing in the fifth film RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION as Ada Wong (pictured above). You can read the quote from Anderson below:
‘I have to go home tomorrow for ‘Rising Resident Evil’. That’s what I’m going to do. As you know, Bingbing is in the last movie and she will be there again… After ‘Resident Evil’ I want to come to China and shoot film again’.
Another report has also claimed that Anderson revealed a short plot synopsis for the film which you can read below:
‘RESIDENT EVIL RISING will follow Alice (played by Milla Jovovich) and her crew as they rush to The Hive, where The Red Queen plots total destruction over the human race’.
It’s exciting to hear that Anderson has begun work on RESIDENT EVIL: RISING (?) after the unusually long wait for details since its greenlight. It’s also great to hear that Bingbing Li (TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION) will reprise her role as Ada Wong. Let’s hope we get more returning characters alongside Alice and Ada such as Chris, Claire, Jill, Leon and Wesker, for what is (probably) the final instalment in the franchise.
