Rendez-Vous With French Cinema In The UK This April

Hiroshima Mon Amour

Whether you’re already a fan of world cinema or looking to expand your film horizons, the 2014 edition of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema is a must.

And what’s even better is that this year’s event isn’t just in London. Instead you can experience a little bit of France in various venues across the UK, including Bristol’s Watershed, Nottingham’s Broadway and Cambridge’s Arts Picturehouse.

So what’s lined up for 2014? Well, there’s a mixture of brand new cinema and restored classics for you to choose from.

Perhaps Albert Dupontel’s César Award winning comedy 9 MONTH STRETCH will ignite your enthusiasm. Or maybe you’ll go for Agnes B’s directorial début MY NAME IS HMMM… or Martin Provost’s literary biopic VIOLETTE. Internationally known director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (AMÉLIE, CITY OF LOST CHILDREN, ALIEN RESURRECTION) is also represented at the event with THE YOUNG AND PRODIGIOUS T.S. SPIVET.

Acclaimed auteur Alain Resnais, who sadly died only last month, is celebrated and honoured in this year’s edition. You can catch the UK premiere of his LIFE OF RILEY (based on British playwright Alan Ackybourn’s 2010 play) as well as his seminal work of French New Wave cinema, HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR in a restored print.

Families can also enjoy a special preview screening of  BELLE ET SÉBASTIEN, Nicolas Vanier’s adaptation of  Cécile Aubry’s novel about a young boy and a wild dog during WWII.

And if that’s not enough to tempt you, we’re also being treated to a whole host of guests and special events including:

  • Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (THE YOUNG AND PRODIGIOUS T.S. SPIVET, Sun 27 Apr, Ciné Lumière)
  • Director and actor Albert Dupontel (9 MONTH STRETCH, Mon 28 Apr, Ciné Lumière)
  • Actress Caroline Silhol (LIFE OF RILEY, Sat 26 Apr, Ciné Lumière)
  • Actor Raphaël Personnaz (QUAI D’ORSAY, Mon 28 Apr, Ciné Lumière)
  • Actress Fanny Ardant and director Marion Vernoux (BRIGHT DAYS AHEAD, Wed 23 Apr, Curzon Soho)
  • Director Martin Provost (VIOLETTE, Fri 25 Apr at Curzon Soho & Sat 26 Apr at Arts Picturehouse)
  • Director Agnes B. (MY NAME IS HMM…, Thu 24 Apr, Curzon Soho)

UniFrance Films and the Institut français du Royaume-Uni bring us the latest edition of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema. This annual showcase of contemporary French cinema will be in key cities across the UK including London (Curzon Soho & Ciné Lumière), Bristol, Cambridge, Canterbury, Brighton, Nottingham and Oxford. The festival runs from 23rd to 30th April 2014.

Advance tickets for all screenings and events are available here, while you can also check out the full programme of events.

Vive la France!

Claire Joanne Huxham comes from the south-west, where the cider flows free and the air smells of manure. She teaches A-level English by day and fights crime by night. When not doing either of these things she can usually be found polishing her Star Trek DVD boxsets. And when she can actually be bothered she writes fiction and poetry that pops up on the web and in print. Her favourite film in the whole world, ever, is BLADE RUNNER.
