Chewbacca Confirmed For ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’

Peter Mayhew

Peter Mayhew raised suspicions a couple of weeks ago after cancelling an appearance at Texas-based convention Comicpalooza in May due to filming commitments – and now THR is reporting that he will indeed be returning as walking carpet Chewbacca for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII.

While Harrison Ford hasn’t yet been confirmed, it’s difficult to imagine Chewie returning without Han, so this is probably the most concrete proof so far that the original trio will be returning.

Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn yesterday let slip that EPISODE VII has already begun filming, with most of the cast in place. Hopefully this is the first of many casting confirmations now that the ball has been set rolling good and proper.

THR previously reported EPISODE VII’s first casting announcement, with Adam Driver set to take on a villainous role in J.J. Abrams’ sequel. Nothing has been officially confirmed by Disney or Lucasfilm just yet, but THR’s sources are usually pretty reliable for this kind of thing.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII is due for release on 18th December, 2015.

So they’re doing it then… They’re really retconning Chewie’s harrowing death and its consequences. Damn! Any chance Mayhew might play another wookiee, like Chewie’s nephew Lowbacca?

They did say most of the EU doesn’t count now… and let’s be honest, Chewbacca’s death was always going to be one of the first things to get retconned!

Note that despite every news source claiming this to be a fact, this is still a rumor. The Hollywood Reported first that ‘sources’ confirmed the news, but those sources are not revealed. If it’s not coming from Disney or Lucasfilm, it’s only a rumor.
