Paul McGann Doubtful About Future ‘Doctor Who’ Return

Paul McGann

Paul McGann is often considered the unluckiest of all the actors to play ‘The Doctor‘ in the BBC’s flagship science fiction drama DOCTOR WHO. I say this of course because the LUTHER star was only given the opportunity to play his 8th incarnation of the character in one feature length television movie that debuted in 1996.

This was until McGann finally reprised his role in a one-off ‘minisode’ that was released online late last year, as part of the show’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Much to every whovian’s delight the special minisode ‘The Night of The Doctor‘ written by Steven Moffat, was received incredibly well and fans have been clambering for McGann to reappear ever since. In light of multiple petitions and internet rumours that McGann’s 8th Doctor will receive his own spin-off, the actor has addressed the possibility of returning to DOCTOR WHO once again. You can read what he had to say below:

‘Of course I’d be super enthusiastic if I got a similar offer. I’d be crazy not to be. I really loved doing it. But that was the first phone call – or any kind of contact – that I’d had since ’96 from anyone associated with Doctor Who. You have to see it from my perspective. I don’t expect the phone to ring. Why should I?’.

‘You know what? I don’t expect to ever to be involved again. But I expect I’ll be surprised one day by something. That’s what Doctor Who’s about. I expect to be surprised. You can never say never with this thing. But it would have to be of the same heart and magnitude, and proper, and true. I wouldn’t want to run away with the rights and make my own spin-off. You’re either in the Doctor Who family… or you aren’t’.

Unfortunately McGann doesn’t sound too hopeful about his chances of returning to DOCTOR WHO but he certainly sounds enthusiastic about the idea. Whether he reprises his role as The Doctor once again is up to Steven Moffat, but no doubt fans will keep hope alive until the next anniversary and failing that there’s always the chance for more minisodes.

In the mean time we still have a brand new series of DOCTOR WHO arriving this autumn starring Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman.
