With Wally Pfister’s directorial debut starring Johnny Depp, TRANSCENDENCE, moving ever closer to our movie screens, Warner Bros has released a new featurette to reel in audiences that shows a medley of clips and some interview snippets with co-star Morgan Freeman.
TRANSCENDENCE explores that ever faithful staple of sci-fi: artificial intelligence. Johnny Depp plays leading AI researcher Dr Will Caster who has a dream. A dream to create a machine with intelligence “greater than every person born in the history of the world“. Dr Caster has evidently never met Bomb #20, or HAL 9000 for that matter. Come on Johnny, we all know AI is a bad idea.
And from the looks of the featurette, things turn rapidly downhill for Dr Caster when he’s seriously injured and has his intelligence downloaded. Luckily it seems that the doctor will still be Johnny Depp shaped once in AI form. I’m not sure about this one yet. The featurette gives a sort of cool thrillery INCEPTION vibe, but will TRANSCENDENCE just be all action and not much else?
You can find it all out for yourself on 17th April when TRANSCENDENCE opens in cinemas. It also stars Paul Bettany, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara and Cole Hause.
