James Cameron Discusses 3D Technology & ‘Deepsea Challenge’

James Cameron

Known for speaking his mind, AVATAR director James Cameron has discussed his thoughts on everything 3D, rallying filmmakers to be more daring when it comes to the technology.

“I’m going to open up my depth more on the AVATAR sequels. In my defense, I thought I might be making a three-hour movie and nobody had ever gone more than 90 minutes so we didn’t know if people were going to go cross-eyed and have their eyeballs melt. Now we know good stereo is good stereo and you can watch it indefinitely…I want filmmakers to embrace this technology as an art form. People like Martin Scorsese, Ang Lee and Alfonso Cuaron are artistically using this third dimension versus studios forcing filmmakers to do post-conversion where the shots weren’t composed with 3D in mind and it just doesn’t feel right”.

With it confirmed that eyeballs do not melt whilst watching 3D film, it looks as if Cameron is fully on board with shooting everything (well, at least the AVATAR sequels) in the third dimension. Confirming his feelings, Cameron went on to discuss his upcoming documentary DEEPSEA CHALLENGE which he’s shot in 3D.

“We’re averaging 35-40 movies a year now, releasing in 3D, and have about 45,000 digital 3D theatres worldwide, which is up 25-30% just on last year, so we’re still rolling out like this huge wave around the world which is pretty exciting…The 3D for movies hasn’t changed that much but documentaries is still a challenging area. We were able to crack the code on the DEEPSEA CHALLENGE film by creating our own cameras…about the size of my thumb. We were trying to revolutionize how you shoot a documentary in 3D. These tiny [camera] systems could be used on Formula 1 race cars, MotoGP motorcycles, helmet cams or when jumping out of an aeroplane”.

Maybe skydiving will be his next endeavor?

AVATAR 2 has a predicted release date of December 2016. In the meantime, DEEPSEA CHALLENGE has a US release date of June 2014.

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
