5 Actors Dueling Over ‘Star Wars’ Lead Role

Star Wars LeadsSo many casting speculations around at the moment. Yesterday we discovered that 4 actors were battling over the role of Dr. Doom in THE FANTASTIC FOUR reboot, and today word comes from Variety that 5 actors are strutting their stuff for the lead role in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII. With Adam Driver already cast as the villain, it’s time we discovered who will go up against the Sith as a Jedi warrior, and the choices seem very diverse so far.

Ed Speelers of Downton Abbey fame has been linked to the role representing the upper class of British society, while John Boyega, famous for bashing in aliens on a  council estate in ATTACK THE  BLOCK is also rumoured to be up for the part. A name that has also come up in the past is that of Jesse Plemons, most familiar for his role in Breaking Bad as the excellent character Todd. Rounding off the list are two theatre actors that have also caught J.J. Abrams eye. Those are Matthew James Thomas (because sometimes one forename just isn’t enough) and Ray Fisher.

DIsney have not commented on the rumours as yet, but it is believed that the casting process has caused the delay in filming as Abrams wants a diverse cast. If this is true then it may be that Boyega and Fisher have the upper hand, although hopefully the best actor for the job is chosen. Right now any news on STAR WARS is exciting, and I’m just glad I get to relive all the excitement of the prequel trilogy marketing campaign all over again.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.

If this is true, it means the main lead WON’T be the offspring of the original cast: none of them can pretend to be the child of either Luke & Mara Jade or Han & Leia. Here’s hoping that the Legacy of the Force canon will withstand Ep. VII’s release.

Knowing Hollywood at the moment they’ll probably pick a black man for the lead just to make sure they don’t look racist.

I’m thinking that the two black guys, are vying for the same role, and the other guys for another. It’s not that a black guy can’t be the lead, it just seems to me that there’s more than one role in this movie, and they aren’t just focusing on casting one guy.
