With THE FANTASTIC FOUR being announced earlier this month, 20th Century Fox are now looking for their main antagonist, Dr. Victor Von Doom. It looks as though the search is narrowing as four actors are now being considered to take on Kate Mara, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell in the rebooted franchise. The list is comprised of three British actors and one Irish actor, dispelling rumours of a female Von Doom.
Sam Riley, Eddie Redmayne, Toby Kebbell, and Domhnall Gleeson are all being considered for one of Marvel’s most iconic villains, played previously by Julian McMahon and Joseph Culp in the 2005 and 1994 films respectively. Riley made waves in 2007 for his role in CONTROL as Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis. He will soon be appearing in Disney’s MALEFICENT. Eddie Redmayne proved his acting chops in MY WEEK WITH MARILYN and LES MISERABLES. Kebbell was recently in WRATH OF THE TITANS and will be taking on the role of one of the apes in DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES while Domhnall Gleeson, son of actor Brendan Gleeson, has been mixing up his genre films with roles in the likes of DREDD, ABOUT TIME, and TRUE GRIT.
All four of the above mentioned actors have proved themselves as great upcoming talents, but none have showcased their villainous chops to the degree we’d expect of a big bad Marvel antagonist. There has already been a lot of controversy around the young cast for this reboot, so will the appointment of one of these thespians be enough to assure such criticisms? Probably not, but I’m sure fans will be more accepting of these choices than of Jesse Eisenberg for BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN.
THE FANTASTIC FOUR is scheduled for release 18th June 2015 in the UK and 19th June 2015 in the US. It stars Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, and Jamie Bell.
