With a little over a month to go now, we are edging ever closer to the exciting directorial debut of Wally Pfister. The talented cinematographer has finally decided to dip his toe in the directing pool after spending years working with none other than Christopher Nolan. Pfister spent years as the figurative apprentice of the master film maker, and as a result collaborated with Nolan on every one of his films to date including the highly acclaimed DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY.
TRANSCENDENCE has attracted an impressive cast consisting of Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Cillian Murphy, Paul Bettany and Morgan Freeman among many other star talents. The film will revolve around Depp’s character Dr. Will Caster, a scientist who is fascinated by the possibility of uniting man and machine to create an emotionally self-dependant artificial intelligence. After Caster is shot and diagnosed as terminal, his wife decides to keep him alive by downloading his entire sub-conscious into a computer. This leads to unexpected dangers by inadvertently creating the most intelligent life form on the planet. While the plot is definitely interesting, it could easily come across as clichéd and poorly executed. However visually TRANSCENDENCE looks incredibly stunning which once again demonstrates Pfister’s skill as a cinematographer, something that will hopefully impact his directing skills in a positive way.
