After a successful premiere at Sundance Film Festival this year the first trailer for Lenny Abrahamson’s FRANK has arrived online. Abrahamson, who also directed 2012’s under-rated drama WHAT RICHARD DID, has taken on one of the more eccentric characters from the British music scene in Chris Sievey’s comedic persona Frank Sidebottom as the inspiration for FRANK. Loosely based on his story the film follows Jon (Domhall Gleeson), a young musician who joins forces with the mysterious Frank (Michael Fassbender) in the hopes of forging a successful movie career.
Our first thoughts on the trailer below can be summed up by the following: humorous, twee, odd, journey, quintessentially British. The heavy presence of Domhall Gleeson is very much welcomed after his brilliant turn in ABOUT TIME and from first glance it appears Fassbender’s performance will bring an unexpected amount of emotion and heart to the character that may allow it to be more than an over-sized head dominating the screen for the duration.
Released in UK cinemas on the 2nd of May have a look for yourself at Abrahamson’s take on Frank Sidebottom:
