4 Directors For ‘Doctor Strange’ Considered

Doctor Strange Marvel Phase 3Marvel have received a lot of hype surrounding their upcoming new venture GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, thanks to a wonderfully comedic trailer. With CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON also on their way, it’s time to seriously consider what Phase 3 will have to offer. We know that Edgar Wright’s ANT-MAN will arrive in 2015, but Marvel have also announced dates for untitled films through to 2017. One rumoured film is DOCTOR STRANGE, the tale of a surgeon who loses the use of his hands, only to be given even more incredible powers.

4 directors have met or are scheduled to meet the folks at Marvel to discuss the potential project and they are a very varied bunch. First up is BRAVE’s Mark Andrews, which has been his only feature film to date. Obviously directors of animation have had mixed success with Brad Bird doing an excellent job with MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL but Andrew Stanton’s JOHN CARTER not doing so well. Next up on the list is Jonathan Levine, best known for small scale comedies such as 50/50 and WARM BODIES.

My personal favourite would be Nikolaj Arcel, the Danish director responsible for A ROYAL AFFAIR. He’s by far the most experienced of the four, but has yet to make a film in the English language. Finally there’s Dean Israelite, whose feature film debut, WELCOME TO YESTERDAY, is still awaiting release and won’t hit the UK until October.

It’s a wide mix, which suggests that Marvel are considering all of their options. I don’t see how any of these diectors link together, which may even suggest that perhaps they are being considered for different film, or have been asked to give their interpretation of the character. After all, the script is still yet to be written, but KUNG FU PANDA writers Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger are being considered. We can expect more news about Phase 3 as the Phase 2 films come to a close.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.

never read a comic book apart from watchmen and batman year one (because I like the films) but from what I hear dr strange is about ii think del toro would be good. fantasy is his genre, he understands character and seems to love comic books and be a geek himself.

I agree. And Johnny Depp would be great as the Doctor. Marvel needs a new frontrunner for Phase 3 and who better than Johnny Depp who has a great track record with interesting characters like Doctor Strange?

I agree on both counts, and Depp would pull audiences. Or has Lone Ranger changed that? Now transcendence looks good. I wonder how it’ll do

Since Lone Ranger was a bomb (and I think a few others of his previous films), this would be a good career revival.

I doubt there. I don’t think it would hurt anyone’s career to join Marvel.

Yup. I hope it happens. It’d benefit both Marvel and Depp in a huge way.

Oh fa sho. Gotg is definitely their biggest risk, and depending on how it does (which is relative since Thor 2 made just less than man of steel but the former did better than part 1and the latter did not break a billion like tdk and tdkr), if gotg triumphs, then it’ll prove marvel has nothing to worry about.

I think GotG looks interesting enough. To compensate for the lack of familiar characters, all Marvel needs is good promotion. It’d be different for Depp and Doctor Strange, because people will be automatically attracted by Depp’s name as well as Marvel. Only few people will actually go into it curious about the actual character.

You’re right. In that sense, Antman is somewhere in the middle. Rudd’s no Johnny Depp, but the apatow and anchorman and other films have at least made him recognizable, and more nameable.

I absolutely love that casting. I have no idea why. Maybe I just really like Paul Rudd. Apatow should be a creative/writing consultant for Ant-Man. Haha.

Who should play Black Panther in your opinion? The two best candidates, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Djimon Honsou, are unfortunately likely unavailable. I want it to be an African. Not just a black guy.

Haha I noticed that earlier. Well djimon was my dreamcasting candidate, and I’ve liked AAA since Oz, but if Depp…… Then why not Denzel? Think book of Eli.

ive just been trying to think of male black actors suitable for the part and its a shame that there arnt that many. I think AAA would be cool but he was kurse wasn’t he? I miss mr eko! will smith would have to bulk up! there must be some really talented African actors whos films dont reach our shores, maybe they might scout while filming aaou

Yeah that’s why AAA is unavailable, just like Djimon Honsou who’s unavailable because he’s in Guardians of the Galaxy. And yeah that’s probably their best solution. Actually GO to African countries and scout their best actors that are also physically imposing. Give someone an opportunity for an international career.
