You may not have caught Nic Cage’s performance in FROZEN GROUND last year but I highly recommend it as it’s one of his best (and John Cusack’s) for a long time. It now seems he’s started to return to those darker roots, with stronger roles and that’s a good thing for all as far as we’re concerned.
JOE looks like a dark, grimy thriller that’s directed by David Gordon Green (PRINCE AVALANCHE) and click here if you’ve not seen the first trailer yet in its entirety. It follows ex-con Joe Ransom (Cage), set up as the unlikeliest of role models who meets a 15-year-old Gary (Tye Sheridan) and is faced with the choice of redemption or ruin.
With a screenplay by Gary Hawkins (THE ROUGH SOUTH OF LARRY BROWN), JOE is based on the novel by the late Larry Brown (Big Bad Love, Facing the Moon), the former Mississippi firefighter renowned for his powerful, gothic storytelling and universal themes of honor, desperation and moral rectitude. Shot on location in Texas, it also features a cast made up of a mix of indie actors and non-actors cast off the streets of Austin, Texas.
We’re very much looking forward to it, check out the poster:
JOE opens in the USA on April 11th and in the UK on July 25th.
