Watch: ‘The Burbs’ Is 25: Celebrate With An Alternate Ending!

Sometimes it seems like the ’80s really were the heyday of cinematic comedy with classics such as THE GOONIES, GHOSTBUSTERS, WEIRD SCIENCE and BIG.

Well if you’re feeling a trifle nostalgic you might be interested to know that it’s the 25th anniversary of cult black comedy THE BURBS. Joe Dante’s offbeat movie follows life on an apparently quiet street in American suburbia. Ray (Tom Hanks) and Art (Rick Ducommun) become convinced their new neighbours, the Klopeks, are murderers, and start spying on the strange goings on to prove their theory right. An extreme case of suburban paranoia or the literal neighbours from hell? It could go either way. With a script by Dana Olsen,  Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher, Corey Feldman and Henry Gibson also star.

Joe Dante was a bastion of ’80s cult cinematic gold, bringing us INNERSPACE, EXPLORERS and GREMLINS (plus its 1990 sequel GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH). He also dipped his toe into the murky waters of horror B movies with PIRANHA (1978) and werewolf flick THE HOWLING (1981).

You can view the goodies below – there’s an original trailer plus a couple of interviews with Dante. However if you haven’t seen THE BURBS yet (seriously – where have you been?) you may wish to avoid the alternate ending!

When not doing either of these things she can usually be found polishing her Star Trek DVD boxsets. And when she can actually be bothered she writes fiction and poetry that pops up on the web and in print. Her favourite film in the whole world, ever, is BLADE RUNNER.
