It has been a project that has struggled to get out of the pre production stages, but it looks like the Tupac Shakur biopic might have a second chance, as it has been revealed that John Singleton has signed up to direct the project.
Alongside directing duties, Singleton will also be in charge of rewriting and producing the movie and is eyeing up a summer start date. Morgan Creek is financing the project alongside Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films.
Singleton, known for directing BOYS N THE HOOD, 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS and FOUR BROTHERS, has a closer connection with the rapper as he worked with Shakur in the 1993 movie POETIC JUSTICE alongside Janet Jackson. Singleton has said that Shakur’s death deeply affected him:
“Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with. His passing deeply affected my life as well as countless people in this world. His life story is as important to my generation.”
Suge Knight and Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur will also be producing the project.
