In 1996, director Roland Emmerich released the military science fiction film about an alien invasion – to put it simply – it was INDEPENDENCE DAY and that main star alongside Jeff Goldblum, was the Fresh Prince Will Smith.
Fast forward eighteen years and Emmerich is set to release the sequel to his action packed sci-fi. However, Variety have announced that their ‘reliable sources‘ have confirmed that Will Smith will not be returning to the role of Captain Steven Hiller in INDEPENDENCE DAY 2.
Scripted by James Vanderbilt (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, ZODIAC), much of the cast and crew will be returning for the sequel, with Dean Devlin, one of the original writers, staying on as producer. According to sources, the film’s script has already been adapted in case Smith did not agree to join the project.
