Tim Story’s RIDE ALONG might not be doing so well with critics, but for audiences Stateside it’s proving to be a hit, claiming the number one box office spot for the third week running with a further $12.2 million taken on this Super Bowl weekend.
RIDE ALONG’s success can probably be attributed to a lack of competition at the moment, as shown by the fact that $12.2 million is the lowest first place total in almost a year – and 49% down on last week. RIDE ALONG now has a total domestic gross of $92.9 million, which is a pretty hefty sum for a film with a 17% rating on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.
Meanwhile, Zac Efron-starring comedy THAT AWKWARD MOMENT opened in third behind Disney’s eternal winter musical FROZEN, which took another $9.3 million in some kind of ironic metaphor for its plot, as it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere almost three months after release – a fact probably helped by Disney’s new sing-a-long version.
If FROZEN stays in the top five for two more weeks, it will tie with AVATAR – the only film in the past ten years to spend twelve consecutive weeks there. But with THE LEGO MOVIE due for release in US cinemas next weekend, Disney will definitely have a job on their hands to retain the family-friendly audience for much longer.
Here’s the latest US box office figures in full:
1. Ride Along $12,214,000 $92.9m
2. Frozen $9,310,000 $360m
3. That Awkward Moment $9,010,000 $9m
4. The Nut Job $7,613,000 $50.2m
5. Lone Survivor $7,161,000 $104.8m
6. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit $5,400,000 $38.9m
7. Labor Day $5,300,000 $5.3m
8. American Hustle $4,300,000 $132.1m
9. The Wolf of Wall Street $3,550,000 $104m
10. I, Frankenstein $3,520,000 $14.4m
