Lionsgate has acquired the North American rights to Leigh Whannell’s horror film COOTIES at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The studio famously handled, to great success, Whannell’s original SAW movie ten years ago, and will distribute COOTIES in domestic territory this year. The film, written by and starring Whannell, alongside Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, Alison Pill, Jack McBrayer, Leigh Whannell, Jorge Garcia and Nasim Pedrad, revolves around a young girl who eats a chicken nugget infected with a virulent disease. She begins to transform into a violent, murderous flesh-ripping juvenile who transmits the disease, which only affects the pre-pubescent. As it quickly spreads, the teachers find themselves trapped in the school, faced with a horde of rampaging adolescents, and must come up with an immediate lesson plan to save their very lives.

“I couldn’t be more excited that ‘Cooties’ has found a home with Lionsgate, a decade after they beautifully handled the release of ‘Saw,'”Whannell said. “I’m thrilled to be working with them again, and can’t wait to introduce ‘Cooties’ to the world with their help.”

Whannell had a superb 2013 seeing success with the sequel to his and James Wan’s INSIDIOUS. Check out our recent interview with the man himself for the home release of that movie over here.
