Ones To Watch: Mom

Starring Anna Faris and Allison Janney ‘Mom’ centers on single mother Christy (Faris) who is 118 days sober and fighting to stay that way whilst working as a waitress and looking after her two children, teenager Violet and younger son Roscoe.  Back in the picture after several years estrangement is Christy’s mum Bonnie (Janney); also a recovering drug and alcohol addict.  Now sober Christy is finding many of the same issues with her daughter Violet as she herself had with Bonnie whilst growing up; namely the effect addiction will have on a mother/daughter relationship.  Granted this doesn’t sound like a barrel of laughs given the nature of the storyline but with Chuck Lorre, the creator of shows ‘Two and a Half Men’ and ‘The Big Bang Theory’, at the helm expect the unexpected and be prepared to be laughing adversity in the face right along with them.

The show premiered in the US back in September on CBS and averages between 7 and 8 million viewers.  In October it was given the full first season go ahead meaning it will have at least 22 episodes.  Networks in America are notoriously harsh on under performing shows and we’re hoping when renewal season comes round in May ‘Mom’ makes the cut as the talents of Janney and Faris deserve to be on TV week in and week out.

Check out the two quick clips below for a taste of the new comedy. Also starring Sadie Calvano, Nate Corddry, Matt Jones, French Stewart, Spencer Daniels, Reggie De Leon and Blake Garrett Rosenthal ‘Mom’ starts tonight on ITV2 with the first two episodes airing from 9pm.

Originally from deep in the London suburbs Vicky is now enjoying the novelty of being able to catch a night bus home from anywhere in the city. Her favourite films are anything John Hughes is involved in, SAY ANYTHING and DEAD POETS SOCIETY. Don't mention the rumour she once served cold tea to Robert Webb and Olivia Coleman.
