Ladies and gentlemen, there is nothing that will remain untouched and this is the sacred rule of the hollywood film industry. In recent months, we have heard talks of films based on apps; ANGRY BIRDS and TEMPLE RUN. We have the long awaited film adaptions of video games, WARCRAFT and ASSASSIN’S CREED. Now, we have the film adaptation of popular trading card game, Magic: The Gathering set to hit the big screen.
Details remain shadowy, much like a Soltari Priest (God, that was bad even for me). However, we do know that Fox is teaming with Hasbro and Fox-favourite Simon Kinberg to produce and develop the property. You may recognise Kinberg ‘s name as he’s been popping up a lot lately, securing deals as the head-honcho property developer of Marvel creations to the Fox film universe, such as X-MEN, FIRST CLASS, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST and the upcoming X-MEN APOCALYPSE and FANTASTIC FOUR.
Reportedly, creative executives Kira Goldberg and Ryan Jones were key in the acquisition and will oversee the films for Fox and Daniel Persitz for Hasbro whilst Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis alongside Wizards of the Coast president Greg Leeds will act in production capacities. Both of Kinberg’s key executives at his Genre Films production company, Aditya Sood and Josh Feldman, are also set to act as executive producers on the movie.
The film, which will serve as a harbinger for a larger, more complex cinematic universe, which if I’m not misunderstanding means there will more than likely be multiple Magic: The Gathering films. Though based on a trading card game, the game itself has a surprisingly rich and complex lore which it seems will be a key-point in portraying famed ‘Planeswalkers’ – powerful wizards – on the silver screen.
