Peter Berg might not have set the box office alight with his last film, blockbuster failure BATTLESHIP (which was slightly underrated in my book). However it turns out that if you give this man a vastly smaller budget, he can turn it into box office gold. His new film, LONE SURVIVOR, has been critically very well received (including five stars from us here at THN) and it looks like the US audience have taken it to heart as well. The film, which stars Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Taylor Kitsch and Emile Hirsch, debuted at number one and took in over $38.5 million, which is very close to the film’s reported budget. Great news for its financiers at Universal. FROZEN also continues to rake in the money for Disney as it only dropped to number 2 and still managed to rake in over $15 million. FROZEN has now earned around $317 million in the states alone!
Bad news however for another high profile debut this week as THE LEGEND OF HERCULES stuttered to a fourth placed position and only earned around $8 million. Considering that the film was slaughtered by the critics, it seems unlikely that it will make a lot more money in the upcoming weeks, and as the film had a budget of around $70 million, it will have a difficult time breaking even. That will probably teach whoever thought it was a good idea to give a film directed by Renny Harlin and starring Kellan Lutz a budget of $70 FREAKING MILLION to never do that again. Only time will tell if the Brett Ratner *shudder* directed HERCULES: THE THRACIAN WARS will do any better, but considering that everything Dwayne Johnson seems to star in these days turns into solid gold, odds are in the film’s favour.

5. American Hustle – $8.6 million ($101.6 million total)

7. August: Osage County – $7.3 million ($7.8 million total)
8. Saving Mr. Banks – $6.6 million ($68.9 million total)
