THN’s Golden Globe Predictions!

golden-globes-logo

Tonight Hollywood will be out in full force for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards. We’ve been tracking Awards Season for you here and have put together those we think will walk away with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s top prizes tonight. Tonight’s awards won’t necessarily reflect what will play out on Oscar night, but they give a good indication of the way things are going and a welcome push to the actors and actresses who walk away triumphant. Take a look below at our predicted winners (excluding the television categories) and why we believe they’ll make the grade.

BEST MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA:
12 YEARS A SLAVE

It seems even the HFPA themselves are torn over who will win the big prize tonight. GRAVITY and 12 YEARS A SLAVE have been the concrete frontrunners for quite some time, but with the likelihood of two acting prizes for the latter, the win should hopefully land in their camp.

BEST ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA:
Cate Blanchett – BLUE JASMINE

This is Blanchett’s eighth nomination and a win would see her do the triple. This one is in the bag, trust us.

BEST ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA:
Chiwetel Ejiofor – 12 YEARS A SLAVE

If Ejiofor wins, expect his Oscar fate to be sealed. But don’t rule out Matthew McConaughey, whose transformative turn in DALLAS BUYERS CLUB is also more than worthy. And the HFPA haven’t let this go unnoticed.

BEST MOTION PICTURE, MUSICAL OR COMEDY:
AMERICAN HUSTLE

Again, this one is straightforward – expect them to do the hustle with David O. Russell.

BEST ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE, MUSICAL OR COMEDY:
Amy Adams – AMERICAN HUSTLE

With the HFPA nominating AMERICAN HUSTLE for seven and AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY for two, it may be easy to place your chips on Amy Adams. However, Meryl is Meryl and has been known to cause more than a few upsets in the past. But, having made their love for Russell’s film exceptionally clear, this is Adams’ to lose.

BEST ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE, MUSICAL OR COMEDY:
Leonardo DiCaprio – THE WOLF OF WALL STREET

DiCaprio’s role in Marty Scorsese’s latest has gained much steam of late, with the controversy over the film’s message doing him no harm whatsoever. Though Bruce Dern is likely to snatch it from under his nose, a win for Leo would see him finally move into the top five, possibly pushing out Robert Redford and joining Hanks, Ejiofor, Dern and McConaughey in the ring.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM:
FROZEN

There is absolutely no contest here when the competition comes in the form of THE CROODS and DESPICABLE ME 2. Really not the best year.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM:
BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR

This is a tough one to call. THE GREAT BEAUTY swept the European Film Awards and has picked up numerous accolades elsewhere. BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR took the Palme d’Or and FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes. Gut instinct says the latter will score higher with the Academy, but we’ll have to take our chances with tonight’s ceremony.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE:
Lupita Nyong’o – 12 YEARS A SLAVE

It really isn’t impossible to imagine AMERICAN HUSTLE pulling a major upset in a lot of categories. A win here for Jennifer Lawrence would be her second in two years and she is already a mortal lock for an Oscar nod. But we firmly believe Lupita Nyong’o will continue her phenomenal awards season track record for her heartbreaking debut film role, before also securing the Oscar.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE:
Jared Leto – DALLAS BUYERS CLUB

Enough said.

BEST DIRECTOR – MOTION PICTURE:
Alfonso Cuaron – GRAVITY

A win for Steve McQueen would be a beautiful thing, but this is Cuaron’s for the taking. With no technical fields to sweep, he will have to make do with Best Director. When his film is such an arresting, visual achievement, we’re happy to let that slide.

BEST SCREENPLAY – MOTION PICTURE:
Eric Warren Singer, David O. Russell – AMERICAN HUSTLE

With the HFPA on a mad David O. Russell hype, expect him to take this award after missing out on it last year for SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE – MOTION PICTURE:
Steven Price – GRAVITY

Hans Zimmer delivers another emotional, rousing score in 12 YEARS A SLAVE, but Price’s orchestrations push the film well past the stratosphere. 12 YEARS A SLAVE may have a great night in the acting categories, but it looks like it may just be edged out here, even if Price is a relative newbie aside from THE WORLD’S END and ATTACK THE BLOCK.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG – MOTION PICTURE:
Let It Go – FROZEN

‘Let It Go’ is a glorious Broadway guilty pleasure. Though ‘Please Mr. Kennedy’ from INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS is less, err, grand, the Coens are likely to find themselves out in the cold tonight, along with Spike Jonze’s HER.

So, to sum up:
12 YEARS A SLAVE: 3
AMERICAN HUSTLE: 3
FROZEN: 2
GRAVITY: 2
BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR: 1
BLUE JASMINE: 1
DALLAS BUYERS CLUB: 1
THE WOLF OF WALL STREET: 1

We’ll see you after another game of Shot Scorsese.
