It has been confirmed that 12 YEARS A SLAVE and HUNGER director Steve McQueen is in the development stage of a “landmark” drama for the BBC.

McQueen, who is currently highly tipped for Oscar-galore this year, is currently developing a TV drama about being black in Britain. It will be set in McQueen’s hometown West London and will span from the 1960s to present day. Speaking of the drama, he said:

‘I don’t think there has been a serious drama series in Britain with black people from all walks of life as the main protagonists.’

It has also been confirmed that McQueen is developing the series with Rainmark films, the producers behind CHURCHILL: INTO THE STORM and THE OTHER MAN. But the BBC were quick to say that the proposed drama is in early development. Ben Stephenson of the BBC said:

“It is too early to announce the details, but it is incredibly exciting to be working with the hugely talented British director who has rapidly become one of the finest directors in the world.”

But what will happen when all this proposed Oscar success comes his way? Don’t fret, the BBC also confirmed that they are fully committed to making it and will work around McQueen’s schedule. Phew! We’ve been holding out for a McQueen/BBC collaboration since McQueen revealed that he was hoping to work with them in 2012.
