Adam Sandler continues to be a box-office draw, even if many of his films fail to hit with critics. Although the disastrous triple bill of live-action Sandler films, JACK AND JILL, THAT’S MY BOY, and GROWN UPS 2 gives us cause for concern, he’s also reuniting with comedic partner in crime Drew Barrymore for BLENDED. Barrymore seems to bring out the best in Sandler, and if that film’s a success then we’ll have no problem giving Sandler the benefit of the doubt for his upcoming THE COBBLER.
THE COBBLER should also be of interest as it is a more serious role for Sandler, which also takes on a fantastical edge. Perhaps this can help in the same way THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY has done for Ben Stiller, and STRANGER THAN FICTION did for Will Ferrell. THE COBBLER sees Sandler as a New York City cobbler who discovers a magical pair of shoes that literally allow him to walk in another man’s footsteps. With plenty of chances for comedy and heart, this could very well be an unexpected hit, especially as it comes from director Thomas McCarthy who gave us THE STATION AGENT and THE VISITOR.
THE COBBLER is released later this year. It stars Adam Sandler, Dustin Hoffman, Steve Buscemi and Ellen Barkin.
