Some bad news late on this Friday evening for fans of Rogue from the X-Men universe, and fans of Anna Paquin too, as it looks like her character has been completely cut from the upcoming X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.

Director Bryan Singer spoke to Entertainment Weekly about an editing decision he had to make in post-production on the big summer 2014 release.

“Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous,” Singer told EW. “It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go. Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in, the Rogue character was in. Even though she’s in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won’t appear in it.”

The scene is said to feature a rescue involving Rogue, Magneto, Xavier and Iceman.

Paquin is aware of the ‘cull,’ as Singer added:

“She completely understood. It’s very disappointing, but she’s very professional and she knows that stuff happens, particularly with material you shoot early on in production. Films evolve.”

The film stars Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Halley Berry, Nicholas Hoult, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Daniel Cudmore, Fan Bingbing, Boo Boo Stewart, Adan Canto, Evan Peters, and Josh Helman.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST hits cinemas around the world on the 23rd May, 2014.
