It’s quite common knowledge that once a book adaptation goes to the big screen, it is usually out of the original author’s hands in what way the studio goes with it, but it didn’t stop fans of John Green expressing their concern over the tagline that accompanies the amazing photo of Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort (Check out the full poster here).
While John Green explained that he did not write the tagline, he did express how much he liked it, saying:
“I found it dark and angry in the same way that Hazel is (at least at times) dark and angry in her humor. I mostly wanted something that said, “This is hopefully not going to be a gauzy, sentimental love story that romanticizes illness and further spreads the lie that the only reason sick people exist is so that healthy people can learn lessons.” But that’s not a very good tag line. I like the tag line because it says, literally, the sick can also have love stories. Love and joy and romance are not just things reserved for the well.”
John Green also applauded 20th Century Fox for releasing a poster that shows that the female romantic lead has visible evidence of a disability, which he says is “damn near unprecedented”.
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS tells the story of two teenagers who fall in love at a cancer support group. The film, which stars Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Natt Wolff, Laura Dern, Sam Trammell and Willem Dafoe is set to be released in June 2014.
