UPDATED: Shia LaBeouf’s Short Film ‘HowardCantour.com’ Controversy

Update – The video has now been taken off the internet and is unavailable to view due to the fact that Mr LaBeouf seems to have plagiarised the entire thing. It was copied from a comic published in 2007 called Justin M. Damiano by famous artist Daniel Clowes, Labeouf’s piece bears such a striking resemblance to Clowes original work that it’s almost a direct adaptation. You can see a picture from the original comic below and the original article below this:

Shia LaBeouf has come a long way from being the child star of Disney Channel original series EVEN STEVENS, the actor shot to fame after Michael Bay’s TRANSFORMERS and went on to star in two more films in the robot-smashing franchise. After some questionable career decisions LaBeouf has moved on to more personal, artistic projects recently such as LAWLESS and the upcoming NYMPHOMANIAC.

Now LaBeouf has tried his hand at directing in this brilliant new short film that was shown earlier this year at Cannes Film Festival and stars Jim Gaffigan, Thomas Lenon and Portia Doubleday. HOWARDCANTOUR.COM tells the story of an internet journalist who has dedicated his life to film and is tasked with reviewing the new release from his favourite director, a decision he finds particularly difficult given that he dislikes the film heavily. HOWARDCANTOUR.COM is definitely worth watching for an enjoyable critique of the life of a journalist and also cinema itself that is surprisingly on the nose. I was certainly left intrigued by the prospect of more directorial work from LaBeouf as he clearly has talent behind the camera and judging from this short he also has a lot to say.
