They were two of the biggest Miramax movies of the 1990s, and now it looks as if Harvey Weinstein is looking to bring sequels for both period romantic comedy/drama SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE and gambling fave ROUNDERS to screens.

Speaking to Deadline, Weinstein has said that he has secured rights to the now defunct Miramax’s entire catalogue.

The deal is with a company called Colony Capital, who bought the rights to the Miramax library from Disney for $660 million. The company now wants to use Weinstein’s expertise to develop properties based on some of their more popular titles, and Harvey has hit the ground running.

“I personally have never made a sequel, but I will make Shakespeare in Love as one. I’ve always wanted to do that and now we have the impetus to. There is so much intellectual property, and we’re in an age where, for however long it lasts, content is king.” He said.

Weinstein went on to discuss ROUNDERS 2, a poker-themed drama that starred a fresh-faced Matt Damon and Edward Norton, released all of the way back in 1998.

“I’ve discussed making Rounders 2 with Matt Damon and I would say that’s going to be instantaneous,” Weinstein continued. “The guys [writers David Levien and Brian Koppelman] have a great idea, a way to make it more international where you start the card game in Paris, that’s all I want to say. There might be a certain beautiful Parisian actress involved in it, and then we’re off to the racetrack and Vegas with Matty and Edward Norton, and a new supervillain to replace John Malkovich.”

Apparently Robert De Niro is in his sights for that role.

Along with the above two projects, Weinstein also said that a TV series based on GOOD WILL HUNTING and FLIRTING WITH DISASTER could also happen.
