Neil Burger Will Not Return For ‘Divergent’ Sequel

DIVERGENT

While the big-screen adaptation of Veronica Roth’s DIVERGENT is still to hit cinemas, the film’s director Neil Burger will not helm sequel INSURGENT – the second of Roth’s  young-adult novel series picked up by Lionsgate. Big things are expected from the franchise with the studio already setting the follow-up for a 20th March 2015 release. So, it will be interesting to see if the film follows the same box-office path as the TWILIGHT and HUNGER GAMES sagas or disappointing flops THE HOST and BEAUTIFUL CREATURES.

It’s not yet known why Burger will not return to the helm but the situation does recall both Gary Ross and Catherine Hardwicke’s departures after the aforementioned phenomenally successful franchise kick-starters TWILIGHT and THE HUNGER GAMES. Could he be demanding too much money while in post-production or does he feel it’s time to hand it over to another filmmaker?

DIVERGENT stars Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet, Theo James, Miles Teller, Jai Courtney, Ashley Judd, Tony Goldwyn, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer, Ansel Elgort, Christian Madsen, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Ben Lamb and Amy Newbold. It opens in cinemas 21st March 2014.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
