Golden Globe Award Nominees

Once again, there’s no love for SAVING MR. BANKS after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association brushed off John Lee Hancock’s Disney tale. Though the HFPA recognised Emma Thompson’s work, the film found itself left out in the cold in the remaining categories (as with the SAG noms), trounced by AMERICAN HUSTLE and 12 YEARS A SLAVE’s seven nominations apiece. SAG favourites THE BUTLER and AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY found no love with the Golden Globes, with even Academy Award nomination mortal lock Oprah completely shut out.

But there is much to celebrate, especially for the British contingent. Idris Elba and Chiwetel Ejiofor found themselves nominated twice, while PHILOMENA gained recognition for Steve Coogan’s script, Best Motion Picture, Drama, and deserved love for Dame Judi. Tale of British racing driver James Hunt, RUSH, also gained exciting praise with two nominations in the Best Drama category and for Daniel Brühl’s magnificent performance as rival racer, Niki Lauda. If Universal can put everything behind their brilliant biopic after this surprise boost, Brühl could score an Oscar nomination in that most difficult of categories this year. Ron Howard does have form with the Academy, after all, and I would truly love to see the German actor get the recognition he deserves.

Greta Gerwig, Sally Hawkins, Julie Delpy – congratulations. Hawkins effectively pushed out Oprah, which is no mean feat, but her tragicomic turn in BLUE JASMINE definitely deserves to stand amongst the other nominees. Gerwig was criminally overlooked by those who should have been pushing her performance in Noah Baumbach’s FRANCES HA (Indie Spirits and Gotham Awards, I’m looking at you), so it comes as quite a shock that it’s the Golden Globes who came to her rescue. As for Julie Delpy, BEFORE MIDNIGHT may have been recognised by Hollywood’s indie collective, but it’s still wonderful to see her consistent work praised at the close of such a well-loved, emotionally charged trilogy.

Elsewhere, Bradley Cooper pushes out Jonah Hill and Tom Hanks in the Best Supporting category, MONSTERS UNIVERSITY fails to make the grade, and Kate Winslet sneaks in a tenth Golden Globe nomination for her turn in LABOR DAY. Oh, and that Best Foreign Language Film category is looking pretty tasty.
