My excitement for Alex Proyas’ GODS OF EGYPT cannot be fathomed by mere mortals. A mythological fantasy based on the fascinating history and religion of ancient Egypt? Sign me right up.
A couple of months back we reported that Geoffrey Rush had joined Gerard ‘Spartaaaaaaaa’ Butler and GAME OF THRONES’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau to star in the film. Now, the female lead has been announced – Australian actress Courtney Eaton, who is set to star in 2015’s MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. Eaton will be playing Zaya, a slave girl who the protagonist, a thief-turned-hero called Bek (Brenton Thwaites), must rescue from the clutches of the evil Set, god of chaos (Butler). Inspired by the actual myths recorded by the Egyptians, Set murders his brother Osiris and battles Osiris’ son Horus (Coster-Waldau) with the intent of bringing down his father, the sun-god Ra (Rush). Some complex family drama there.
I love the concept of a traditional heroic tale set against the backdrop of warring deities; this combined with the rich culture of Ancient Egypt could add a depth to GODS OF EGYPT that we don’t often see in similar films such as the fun but flawed CLASH and WRATH OF THE TITANS.
GODS OF EGYPT will be the first film directed by Proyas since the (in my opinion) tremendously underrated KNOWING, released in 2009. There is currently no release date set (pun intended or unintended, you decide), so stay tuned to THN for the info.
