SAG Award Nominees

sag

Robert Redford, where art thou? Today’s SAG nominations may be pretty straightforward, but Redford’s omittance is more than a little surprising. But, as I said recently, campaigning pays, even if you are a seasoned professional. Replaced in the top five by Forest Whitaker, this doesn’t mean the Academy won’t opt for him, but with late screeners of THE WOLF OF WALL STREET and AMERICAN HUSTLE finally making an impression, DiCaprio and Bale are just as hungry for that fifth spot.

12 YEARS A SLAVE unsurprisingly leads the pack, with only one nomination for GRAVITY, though Cuaron’s film is far less of a threat in the categories SAG celebrates. After its recent push, Spike Jonze’s HER is left in the cold without even Best Ensemble recognition, but this isn’t necessarily gospel for the critics’ darling. NEBRASKA also loses out on a Best Ensemble nod, and, though Bruce Dern and June Squibb find themselves nominated again, it’s Will Forte who loses out. DALLAS BUYERS CLUB rounds off the Best Ensemble category, a fantastic, well-deserved push, but a shock nonetheless when no females are threatening the acting categories.

But it’s not all bad news in the Best Supporting ranks. Supposed mortal locks Leto, Fassbender and Abdi are joined by James Gandolfini and Daniel Brühl in the most difficult to call category. Jared Leto is surely bound to win, but ENOUGH SAID’s recent push by the Boston Society Of Film Critics (and general love for the late actor) is bound to keep him in contention. Though Jonah Hill’s name could easily pop up again in the Academy’s list of nominations, THE WOLF OF WALL STREET’s late screenings seem to be the only thing standing against it at this stage. But if that makes room for Daniel Brühl to sneak in, well, I’m all for it. The heart and soul of RUSH, his performance has been criminally underappreciated.

As for the women, there’s nothing too out of the ordinary to report, with the five main actresses I’d put my money on reporting for duty. However, the Academy love a foreign performance, and, with Emmanuelle Riva missing out on a SAG nomination last year, something similar could happen – even if it would be nothing short of a miracle for the young Adele Exarchopoulos to find herself nominated. For now, let’s remain happy with the strong British showing. As for Best Supporting Actress, Jennifer Lawrence squeezes out Octavia Spencer, continuing her stellar form and proving that everybody really does love her. Including me.

It’s time to step up your campaigns, boys and girls.
