It happens a few times a year. You see a trailer for an upcoming comedy that showcases plenty of laughs, decent characters, and actors you can imagine having great chemistry, only for the final piece to fall flat on its face and reveal that all the best moments were in the trailer. WE’RE THE MILLERS is NOT one of those films. Instead, it’s a fast-paced comedy that lives up to the hype and often exceeds it, thanks to a very script and even funnier performances.

Sudeikis plays David Clark, your run of the mill pot dealer who ends up owing his supplier (Helms) a favour, and so must transport a “smidge” of pot from Mexico to the US. In order to pull off his mission he decides the best thing to do will be to pose as an all American family in order to avoid suspicion. Unfortunately, David doesn’t have a family and so he enlists the help of the homeless rebel (Roberts), his naive neighbour (Poulter) and a local stripper (Aniston) to fill out the roles. It’s a fairly standard plot that could have gone either way, but as the unlikely quartet grows closer, it becomes a journey where the pot-smuggling is pushed aside for the more important character moments.

Each of the main cast members brings along a delightful spark to the family dynamic. Sudeikis is likable despite being a bit of a jerk, Aniston keeps her class and domineering presence, Roberts foulmouthed teen offers up some very quick wit, and best of all is Poulter treading the fine line between cute and idiotic. His naivety has a charm all of its own, but not in an overly sympathetic way. Joining the main cast are some unforgettable co-stars such as Offerman, Hahn, and Quinn as a family that constantly bumps into the newly named Millers.

Unlike many comedies of the last few years, WE’RE THE MILLERS seems incapable of running out of fresh material. No joke is dwelled upon for too long and the lines are often laugh out loud hilarious, as well as being quite clever at times. When Aniston’s boss mentions about the strip club’s competition opening across the street, Aniston is quick to mention that it’s an Apple store. When the jokes aren’t original, the set-ups and pay-off are timed perfectly. As Poulter practises kissing with his fake sister and fake mother in order to impress a girl, it’s no surprise as to what happens next, but like great horrors the build-up is every bit as important as the climax. The free reign offered to the cast in ad-libbing their lines also adds to the comedic brilliance, but again unlike many films you feel as though every line is coming from the characters and not the actors. The film even adds the best breaking of the fourth wall since Richard Pryor in BREWSTER’S MILLIONS.

It’s been a truly long time since I have genuinely cried with laughter and had stomach pains from laughing so hard at a film. Not to mention a film that is also capable of making you acre and feel for characters. A lot of comedies have tried to display truly reprehensible characters as the good guys, without developing them enough to earn forgiveness. WE’RE THE MILLERS takes it to a point where you want to be on this adventure with this family. Deserving of multiple viewings, WE’RE THE MILLERS excels at what it was meant to do. Make you laugh and laugh, with the kind of jokes that creep up on you from out of your memory days later, and leave you laughing like a loon at inappropriate moments.

5 STARSWE’RE THE MILLERS is released on DVD and Blu-ray on 16th December.
