Huge news on this Tuesday morning as it looks as if SUNSHINE ON LEITH and WILD BILL helmer Dexter Fletcher is to direct Ben Whishaw in the biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Fletcher, who was previously known for his acting work on LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS and the superb 80s kids show Press Gang, looks to have beat off all competition for the coveted gig after impressing with this year’s superb musical based around the music of The Proclaimers.
Peter Morgan (RUSH, THE QUEEN) is writing the Freddie Mercury biopic which for a long time had the talents of Sacha Baron Cohen attached to it. Now the talented SKYFALL actor Whishaw will assume the role of the iconic frontman, with the film covering the band’s early years leading the way to their Live Aid performance in 1985.
Sony have first dibs to distribute the film.
