‘G.I. Joe 3’ Writer Evan Daugherty Talks About Threequel Expectation

G.I.JOE

Although the first installment in Paramount’s toy-based movie franchise G.I. JOE: RISE OF COBRA was a misfire to say the least, the second film was dramatically improved both in terms of story and tone. The dark and gritty style along with the added star power of Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis certainly helped the quality of G.I. JOE: RETALIATION.

Despite the long delay, re-shoots and production issues that the film suffered from, it still ended up grossing slightly more than its predecessor, which lead Paramount to begin development on a third film in the series. Evan Daugherty (SNOW WHITE AND HUNTSMAN, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES) was hired as writer of the untitled third G.I. JOE film, which he is currently hard at work penning. Now Daugherty has spoken a little bit about the upcoming sequel and also touches on the shocking decision to kill Channing Tatum’s character ‘Duke’ off in the previous film. Here is what he had to say:

“I think they gotta keep me sword to secrecy on this one. I gotta stay quiet because I’m literally in the middle of writing it. When you called, I was writing it”.

When asked about the date he will submit the script to the studio he said:

“I don’t know. Sometime in the next few months, I would imagine”.

And finally here’s what he had to say about Duke’s death in G.I. JOE: RETALIATION:

“Would I have killed off Duke? It’s hard to say, you never know what process that went through to make that film. I don’t know, it’s hard to say, because sometimes killing off a character might make for a dramatic story, but what I’ll say for this new movie, what we’re trying to do, what I”m trying to do, being a fan of the original cartoon in particular and the comic book as well. The comics are somewhat different than the cartoon. We’re just really trying to make a totally a great G.I. JOE movie which to me is about a lot of action but like a lot of fun with a sort of hint of sci-fi, an exciting world you’ve never been to, etc. So yea, I’m excited about what the next G.I. JOE Movie can be”.

Lets hope that the upcoming third film in the franchise can maintain the tone and gritty action of G.I. JOE: RETALIATION and maybe bring back a few characters from the original at the same time.

You actually think RETALIATION is a dramatic improvement over RISE OF COBRA?
    What are you smoking?
Whatever it is, I want some.
