Chris Cooper Talks ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’

Chris Cooper

The academy award winning Chris Cooper (AMERICAN BEAUTY, ADAPTATION, THE MUPPETS) is one of the greatest actors of our time and arguably one of the few great character actors working in Hollywood today. For this reason, I was overjoyed when it was announced that he will be portraying Norman Osborn and possibly his villainous alter-ego The Green Goblin in the upcoming sequel THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 from Sony Pictures.

Osborn was previously played by the brilliant Willem Dafoe in Sam Raimi’s SPIDER-MAN released in 2002 and had minor roles in its two subsequent sequels. Now in a new interview Cooper has talked a little bit about his characters introduction in the film and also hints at Sony’s larger plan to form the super-villain team ‘the sinister six’ in future installments of the franchise. Here is what he had to say:

‘[Amazing] Spider-Man 2′ was an introduction to Norman, and — you’ll see — an extremely odd introduction, which apparently will lead to something more’.

When asked if he was familiar with the concept of the Sinister Six and its potential as the future direction of the series, Cooper said he was “vaguely” aware.

‘They sent me some material,’ he said. ‘But they said also that this Spider-Man is its own Spider-Man. We’re just kind of starting from the beginning’.

‘And I believe there’s a lot of stage-setting for the next film. There are several villains in this movie, and some of them are more foreground and important. Jamie Foxx is and stuff. A couple of us are more hanging around the background because I think there will be a bigger deal. I don’t actually know, but that seems to be what they’re doing. I’m not an idiot either, but I can’t claim hard and fast knowledge of this. I won’t. I can’t because I don’t actually know, but you and I can speculate’.

Well I can’t wait to see what Cooper brings to the role and how Sony will plant seeds that will lead into their eventual ‘sinister six’ team up without bloating the film to SPIDER-MAN 3 levels. It’s also still unknown whether Norman Osborn will take on the Green Goblin mantle in the film or wait until the third installment of the web slinging franchise currently set for May 2016. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Chris Cooper and Dane Dehaan.
