ALICE IN WONDERLAND was a major surprise hit when it was released in 2010 and blew the box office away by grossing over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office. The film currently sits at the fifteenth spot in the highest grossing films of all time, which is incredibly impressive and no doubt pleased Disney executives to no end.
If the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise has taught us anything it’s that Disney loves to milk any franchise they can. So it came as no surprise when Disney announced last year that they had plans for a sequel to the fantasy juggernaut with Linda Woolverton returning to pen the screenplay. Tim Burton (BEETLEJUICE, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS) will not be returning to the directors chair for the second film but Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp will reprise their roles as Alice and the Mad Hatter. It’s now been confirmed that James Bobin (THE MUPPETS, THE MUPPETS MOST WANTED) will direct the sequel as he had been previously rumoured to, and the film will be released on 27th May 2016.
Disney have also set the release date for Jon Favreau’s JUNGLE BOOK which will hit theatres 9th October 2015. Both of these films should prove to be visually stunning going by Disney’s track record for live action films of late and hopefully both directors will be able to bring their unique touches to each production.
