Idris Elba Once Spoke To Marvel About ‘Luke Cage’

Luke Cage

Idris Elba is easily one of the most talented actors working in Hollywood today, with not only this years PACIFIC RIM and THOR: THE DARK WORLD under his belt but also the highly successful LUTHER television series. Not forgetting Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS last summer. With such high demand for the actor, it’s a wonder that he has never lead his own superhero project on the big screen. Well, now Elba has revealed that there was once talks for him to star as Luke Cage for Marvel Studios.

For those of you that don’t know, Luke Cage is a superhero with near impenetrable skin making him impervious to bullets and other weapons, as well as possessing super strength. Recently a major announcement was made when Marvel signed a deal with Netflix to produce four different television shows before culminating in a DEFENDERS team up series. One of the shows Netflix will produce is based on Luke Cage, when Elba is asked about potentially starring in the series he remains coy….you can read the interview below:

Is there a particular superhero that you want to play?
No, there isn’t one. For Halloween, I wore Superman. And I was like, ‘I don’t mind this cape being behind me’ [laughs].

You could bring the cape back in style. Everyone will start wearing capes if you wore a cape.
[Laughing] Yeah, man, I wouldn’t mind giving that a go. But, no, other than that, I don’t really have any superhero that I like. There was talk about Luke Cage at one time — I thought Luke Cage was a pretty interesting character. They were going to do it, but I don’t know what happened…

They are developing him into a television show.
That’s right, yeah.

We can only hope and pray that Elba gets his wish and Netflix offer him the part of Luke Cage. After all, he is no stranger to the small screen after THE WIRE and LUTHER, and with each series only consisting of thirteen episodes it wouldn’t require Elba to take a huge amount of time out of his busy schedule. Not to mention the fact that Elba’s name will attract positive interest after audiences potentially tiring of the superhero overload currently occurring on the big and small screen.
