‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’ Fox’s Second Most Expensive Film Ever

Bryan Singer is returning to franchise that he created fourteen years ago with the original X-MEN for next years X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. Singer helped kick start the wave of superhero films that have swept through theatres since 2000 with his original film starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Halle Berry.

This makes it fitting for the director to return to 20th Century Fox’s mutant-filled franchise that has seen multiple sequels, spin-offs and prequels hit the silver screen since his departure. The new film will bring back the majority of the original films’ cast and also unite them with the new cast members seen in 2011’s prequel X-MEN: FIRST CLASS by using time travel as a plot device. Clearly Fox are hoping to attract AVENGERS-level interest in the project after Marvel Studios’ team-up film changed the game for superhero franchises.

News hit earlier this week that Singer was planning to do some re-shoots/additional shooting on the large scale production in Montreal. Now an interview with Quebec film commissioner Hans Fraikin has not only confirmed that X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is returning to Montreal, but the report also states that the film is Fox’s second most expensive ever after James Cameron’s AVATAR. Here is what he had to say:

“Director Bryan Singer and some of the cast and crew of X-Men: Days of Future Past will be back in town before Christmas to shoot some extra scenes for the film, which is the second-most expensive movie ever produced by Hollywood studio 20th Century Fox, behind only Avatar. A couple of weeks is a big reshoot, but there is no reason to read into this news that there are any problems with the movie. It happens all the time, especially with big pictures.”

It should come as no surprise if this is true, after all the large cast alone with a number of Academy Award winners and nominees would carry a pretty substantial price tag. This is not including the CGI/special effects required for any big budget superhero film let alone such an ambitious one.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST stars Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Ellen Page, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult. It’s released 23rd May 2014.
