THN look forward to all things Pixar and so the announcement that Transworld are set to publish this book comes with a lot of interest! CREATIVITY, INC.: Overcoming the Unseen Forces that Stand in the Way of True Inspiration, by Ed Catmull, co-founder and President of Pixar Animation Studios is released on 10th April 2014 and we’ve got further details for you now!
In the book, Catmull – who founded the company in 1986, with John Lasseter and Steve Jobs, and is also President of Walt Disney Animation Studios – takes readers deep into the nerve centre of Pixar and reveals the ideals, principles and practices, honed over years, that have made the studio so widely admired – and so profitable.
Here, for the first time, is the inside story of Pixar’s rise from a small, money-losing hardware company to a movie studio with 1,200 employees and a streak of fourteen No. 1 movies in a row that has garnered 30 Academy Awards and earned more than 7 billion dollars worldwide. SEVEN BILLION!
But CREATIVITY, INC., which Catmull wrote with Amy Wallace, is also a distillation of everything Catmull has learned over the years about leadership, management, and the coexistence of art and commerce; about making greatness the goal, above all else; and about embracing the uncertainty and messiness that comes with any creative enterprise. He had this to say:
“People are inherently creative and able to solve problems, even the best companies, with the best intentions, erect barriers and send messages that inhibit employees and derail creativity, without meaning to – or even realising that they are doing it. Only by reframing how we think about mistakes and acknowledging how little we see, can we open the door for others to create.”
British and Commonwealth rights were acquired by Transworld Publisher Bill Scott-Kerr from Denise Cronin and Andy Ward at Random House Inc, and Scott-Kerr added:
“Over the past two decades, Pixar has, for me, been a shining beacon of creativity, storytelling genius and innovation. Being given access to Ed Catmull’s unique vision in Creativity, Inc., not only as a publisher, but also as a reader and a consumer, is inspiring, energising and instructive. I can’t wait to share his insights with the potentially huge audience who, I’m sure, will be equally fascinated by it. This is a genuinely exciting and revelatory book.”
Creativity, Inc is released on 10th April 2014 and surely a must-read for next year…already!
