It scooped a ton of Oscars in the late 1990s and now the film that John Madden directed and Joseph Fiennes, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Affleck and Judi Dench starred in, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, is heading for the London stage.
The film revolved around a young, skint Shakespeare, who after suffering from writers block, meets and falls for the beautiful Viola De Lesseps, and is inspired to write on of his most celebrated plays, the most famous love story of all time, Romeo and Juliet.
Lee Hall, the genius behind the stage adaptation of Billy Elliot, will pen the stage play for the musical, which will debut next year at the famous Noel Coward Theatre in the heart of the West End.
Producer Sonia Friedman said: “Shakespeare in Love bursts with life and is a moving and hilarious celebration of everything we love about the inspirational and transformative power of theatre.”
Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod will direct and design the production, which is being backed by the mighty Disney Theatrical Productions.
