Great British films, champagne and Ewan McGregor? That can only mean one thing – the British Independent Films Awards are back, and this time they are back with a huge bang!
Now in its whooping 16th year, BIFA recognise the best and brightest talent that Independent cinema has to offer, and this year is definitely no different. Ewan McGregor did the honours of announcing the nominees, some with a little bit of struggle, but got through it in the end.
The big nominations of the event went to STARRED UP, which got a deservingly eight nominations, while THE SELFISH GIANT picked up seven. FILTH, METRO MANILA and LE WEEK-END all received five nominations each. You can check out the full nominees here.
But the big question is, what makes the 2013 awards so different? The first being the shiny new award that all the winners will get. Keeping the flag flying for the brits, it was designed by British duo Fredrikson Stallard and created by Swarovski. The new award looks absolutely amazing, and is going to make race to bag one even more exciting.
And the 2013 jury is just a varied as the nominations itself! The people who have the gruelling task of picking the winners include: director Penny Woolcock, Julien Temple, Fine Young Cannibals singer Roland Gift, Sally El Hosaini, UNDER THE SKIN’s Antonia Campbell-Hughes and MyAnna Buring (who also attended the nominees event).
Nominees, Jury and industry folk mixed into the room to watch the announcement, and it was filled with much camaraderie. We bonded with actress and most promising newcomer nominee Harley Bird over our Dr Martens collection, and true gentlemen and MC for the day Ewan McGregor mingled with the crowd and got a little bit excited when Scottish film FILTH took away some nominations.
The winners will be announced on Sunday 8th December at Old Billingsgate, London. Actor and BIFA Patron James Nesbitt will host the ceremony. Keep it THN to get updates of all the award ceremonies happening this season.
TV and Theatre Nerd who will always try and give you a good opinion, unless it is something to do with Bloc Party, then it will be completely biased. Favourite films include: HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH, ALMOST FAMOUS AND MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO.
