Is Chiwetel Ejiofor Heading For ‘Star Wars Episode VII?’

Consider this one a massive rumour only. We’d got wind of J.J. Abrams doing a little bit of a press tour for his upcoming book ‘S’ a couple of weeks back, and of course put in a request to interview the guy. We have no clue about, and lets face it, no real interest in the novel, but saw the opportunity as a perfect one to slide in the odd alternative question here and there, even though we would have probably been hit over the head by a PR at the mere mention of the other ‘S’ word.

Well, Abrams didn’t end up coming to the UK in the end, but he did do a few promotional sessions in the U.S. and The Times newspaper reporter Rhys Blakely managed to get himself a spot. The journalist apparently walked into the Bad Robot office to speak with Abrams about the novel and bumped into British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, who was waiting there.

He revealed all in his article on the subscription based Times website.

The Lost and Star Trek director thrives on mystery and surprises – which pits him against the Hollywood hype machine. Can he keep his plans for the most famous sci-fi franchise of them all under wraps?

The British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, front-runner in this year’s Oscar race, is sitting in the lobby of J.J. Abrams’ office. If you’re a sci-fi fan, this might be very big news indeed.

I’m here to talk with Abrams about a side project – a book, called S., of which more later. But, really, if we’re honest, there’s only one thing any showbiz hack wants to know from J.J. right now: the skinny on Star Wars Episode VII, which he’s going to direct.

No, Ejiofor might have just been waiting there for Abrams to finish up so they could go grab a beer after a long day of junket interviews, or then again, he may be in advanced negotiations to play a character in the epic saga. Blakely did manage to ask him about the actors presence a little later on in the interview. Abrams response…

He looks at me, dead-eyed. “I can’t discuss casting,” he says. “But he’s a very talented gentleman.”

Discuss?
