When it comes to sequels THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL would not be the first film that springs to mind, but it’s coming, and they’re eyeing up the stars already! It was revealed today that Richard Gere is the first big star that Fox Searchlight are hoping to sign, and it’s set to be the lead role.
The John Madden directed film become a surprising box office smash, making $130 million on a $10 million budget. And for the sequel, they plan to keep some familiar faces with the original screenwriter Ol Parker taking on screenwriting duties for film number two. Penelope Wilton also confirmed that the original actors will be returning too! She said:
“We had a wonderful time shooting this film the first time and I am thrilled we will be going back in January to do another one. As far as I know everybody will be returning.”
THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, based on the novel These Foolish Things by Deborah Moggach, tells the story of British retirees who travel to India in what they believe to be a newly refurbished hotel, but it is completely different than the advert suggested. It starred Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel and Tom Wilkinson.
THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL 2 is expected to go into production in January.
