This years impressively gore-some EVIL DEAD reboot was one the horror highlights in a rather unremarkable year for the genre. The film, made for only $17 million, went on to gross almost $100 million worldwide and assured a sequel would follow. A few months ago, we even interviewed director Fede Alvarez, who claimed he and his writer Rodo Sayagues were looking at ideas to see what that sequel story could include . Well, according to Sayagues, both have sadly departed the project.
“Look, I am sorry to tell you this but that movie won’t happen. Evil Dead 2 is not going to happen, at least not with us involved. We left that project many months ago because we preferred to put our energies on other things. I don’t know if the producers still have intentions of making it. But what I can tell you is that we are not part of that project.”
So, with Sam Raimi rumoured to begin ARMY OF DARKNESS 2 early next year, we may not have too long to wait for some groovy EVIL DEAD horror. Still, I was looking forward to more from Alvarez’s intense and disgusting style. How about you guys?
Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
