Marvel chief Kevin Feige is currently on the promotional trail with the studios latest Phase II effort THOR: THE DARK WORLD (our review here) and he’s constantly being pressed to disclose details of future instalments of Marvel’s blockbusting roster. Of course, while we have the latest outing for our hammer-swinging demigod, the return of super soldier Steve Rogers and an otherworldly crew guarding the galaxy to look forward to, perhaps it’s the sequel to THE AVENGERS that most will be probing Feige for.
The only officially confirmed detail regarding AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is that James Spader will be the robotic sub-titled villain. The veteran actor, who’s currently chewing scenery in the gripping series The Blacklist and putting Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to shame in terms of watchability, may well be donning the dots and going the motion-capture route. Feige has confirmed that the studio have hired Spader for more than just his voice talent:
Well, I think it will be more than a voice role, we’ll be capturing his face and his body to create a whole performance. He’s a very unique and incredibly exciting and unpredictable actor. And Ultron in the comics is a robot, but what’s cool about him in the comics and certainly how Joss Whedon is interpreting him for the movie – is that he is much more than just a robot. That he’s infused with much character. And I don’t want to say too much, but you can imagine James Spader will be very dynamic in his portrayal of this character. We did not hire James Spader to do a robot voice.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
