With the hugely successful Breaking Bad – one of AMC’s most popular series to air – coming to an untimely end (we’re all sad to see it go, though obviously not as much as DreamWorks CEO Mr. Katzenberg), fans are left emotionally drained, without life-long purpose and are numb to all avenues of human connection.
Worry not though, my fellow fans, because Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) will be returning – if not only for cameos – in its spin-off series Better Call Saul – the prequel series following the beloved, eccentric lawyer (there are lawyers like that?) Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk).
For those worried about the show’s consistency and continuity, worry not, as Breaking Bad director Vince Gilligan is on board, coming to the aid (if necessary) of showrunner – and Goodman creator himself – Peter Gould. He and Gould will be filming the series in an hour-long format, which will also be shot in Albuquerque and maintain the visual palette of its parent show. They also intend for the series to premiere either in the late summer or early autumn period (more specifically August-October) of 2014.
Originally, the series was set to contain thirty-minute long episodes, but in an exclusive with THR, Gilligan stated:
“We’re both one-hour drama guys,” he says, but more to the point, they realized that so much of what they enjoyed about Breaking Bad was the show’s visual elements. “So we figured, ‘Why not shoot Saul in the same way?’ Let’s shoot it in Albuquerque, let’s get as much of the crew back together as possible, and let’s do it the way we did it before so that it will be of a piece with that pre-existing fictional universe that we had so much fun creating.”
The primary alteration in the series’ tone, they report, will be a reversal of the seventy-five percent drama, twenty-five percent comedy ratio that was prominent in Breaking Bad, which is to be expected when AMC’s favoured lawyer gets more screen time. Gilligan is set to direct the pilot and hopes to be included in the writing process over the series’ first season.
