Call me a score snob, but one of the biggest issues I had with Marc Webb’s promising franchise opener, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, was James Horner’s seemingly incongruous compositions. You couldn’t go a scene or two without some horn action or a leitmotif that seemed to plagiarise the rest of his work, making things a little distracting. Granted, it would always be hard to live up to Danny Elfman’s rousing theme from Sam Raimi’s trilogy, but Horner’s work never quite fit this Marvel outing.
Composer extraordinaire, Hans Zimmer, will be scoring Marc Webb’s 2014 sequel, and, after providing some of the most iconic themes post-John Williams, Andrew Garfield should be swinging to something pretty special. Arguably, Zimmer’s involvement will significantly change the tone from the first of Webb’s Spidey films, but the announcement of new cast members Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Chris Cooper and Dane DeHaan looks set to up the sequel’s ante considerably.
Known for his anthemic, bombastic work within the superhero realm, the composer told Collider that he was taking time to experiment with different approaches to the film:
“I’ve done a lot of action, I’ve done a lot of buildings falling down basically and things exploding, so I’m sort of trying to figure out, ‘Is there a slightly different way of doing it?’ And I’m not sure yet, but I’m certainly working on it.”
He also spoke very positively about footage he had seen, confirming the notion that Webb hasn’t lost his penchant for keeping things naturalistic amidst the madness:
“You have no idea how [well] the relationships work in this one. That is what he’s masterful about; truly, truly, truly wonderful. And the movie just sort of sparkles whenever—because it could be so easily a movie driven by action, and it really is driven by charm and love and sparkling dialogue. And the chemistry between the characters is fantastic.”
After his recent work on MAN OF STEEL and THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY, anticipation over this score is obviously high, with his blend of 2013 orchestrations (RUSH, THE LONE RANGER and 12 YEARS A SLAVE among them) showcasing how his constant originality and demand place him right at the top of his game.
Oh, and if you’re hoping he’ll include ‘Spider-Pig’ in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2:
“No I will not, but you have no idea how tempting that is.”
