Derek Cianfrance, director of this year’s hit drama THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, has been presented with a terrifying new project revolving around the scariest entity known to man. The Clown.

The film, pleasantly titled A COTTON CANDY AUTOPSY, is based on the DC Comics series ‘Beautiful Stories For Ugly Children‘, published between 1989 and 1992. The name ‘A Cotton Candy Autopsy’ was given to the first issue, its issue 13 sequel story and also a compilation of all issues up to number 13. While we don’t yet know many details on what the film’s plot entails, we do know it will star Ben Mendelsohn, who worked with Cianfrance on THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES. We also know it features those infernal painted-faced terrors that haunt nightmares the world over.

The first issue of the comic follows the story of the narrator, a clown whose circus is burnt to the ground at the beginning, as he goes on a road trip with his oddly-named friends Bingo, Foo Foo, Joey Punchinello and Addy the Freaklady. Safe to say it all gets rather twisted and is not quite the stuff of childrens’ Saturday morning television. This does sound like a brilliantly unconventional twist on the standard road movie formula so it seems likely that the bones of this story will make it to the film.

Cianfrance is currently writing the film with Darius Marder. There is no release date at this early stage.
